Singapore is set to host its most prestigious endurance event to date, when the new eight-city World Championships triathlon series kicks off with its opening race staged in the city-state on Friday 8 - Saturday 9 May 2009. In addition to a full distance race (1.5 km. swim, 40 km. bike, 10 km. run), there will also be shorter categories for the public and children. The proposed start point is the Marina Bay Floating Platform, with the swim leg in the new Marina Reservoir and the running and cycling legs along the 5.067 km. F1 circuit past the Singapore Flyer, City Hall, and Esplanade attractions.
This new annual series marks a switch from the current World Championships format held in one (different) city every year. London, Madrid and Washington DC are other city venues on the new calendar circuit, with Yokohama in Japan as the only other Asian venue. Each of the eight legs is expected to attract about 120 of the world's top triathletes to compete for a prize purse of US$ 150,000 (approx. S$ 229,000) and to earn ranking points, with the best qualifying for the US$ 250,000 grand final on Australia's Gold Coast from 9-13 September 2009.
